PANAMA CITY, Fla- The Gulf Coast Lady Commodores will try to defend their conference, region, and national titles with a an almost entirely new group of players.

It's hard to follow up a 32-1 National Championship season, but when you play for a program like Gulf Coast it's what you sign up for.

"The standard is set pretty high." Head coach Roonie Scovel said. "The bar is set pretty high for this Gulf Coast team. We're just going to do the best we can. It's a new team and we can't look backwards. It's a new team with a new personality, and we just got to see how good this team can get."

This year's Lady Commodore team will look alot different from last year's squad.

"We have eight freshmen, so we're definitely young and under developed. So, we've just got to go to work and see how fast we can grow up," added Scovel.

Coach Scovel only has 4 sophomores on the team, and just two who played significant minutes. Kyra Crosby averaged just over 10 points a game as the one of the top reserves last year. Crosby and Porshia Harris will need to play big this year.

"I think you're going to see alot more emphasis on post play, since that's alot of our experience and our talent is there as far as post season play." Scovel said. "Probably going to see a little more from the post early on while we're trying to get these guards going."

The Lady Dores are young, but when you can recruit like Gulf Coast, they with youth comes talent. You can expect new faces, and a slightly modified style of play when you watch Gulf Coast this season, but one thing will remain the same, Coach Scovel will always expect the most out of her players, regardless of their age.

Gulf Coast opens the season in the Milton Johnson classic at Chipola College against Broward College. Interesting note for the Lady Dores, they haven't lost the Panhandle Conference crown since the 96-97 season. That was coach Scovel's first year as head coach, and they finished second.
