Toomer's Trees Cut Down Tuesday

Auburn, AL---To say the least it's a sad image of a tradition ending, hopefully not for good, but at least for the near future!

Workers in Auburn Tuesday went about the business of cutting down the oak trees at school landmark Toomer's Corner.

Those trees, draped in toilet paper after every Auburn win over the years, were poisoned by a University of Alabama fan by the name of Harvey Updyke Junior, who's now serving time for that act.

Auburn officials and horticulturists from all over tried for two years to save the oaks, but couldn't keep them from slowly dying.

So those oaks, part of the university for more than a century were cut down Tuesday, with dozens of reporters, photographers, and melancholy fans on hand to watch.

Auburn officials haven't announced exactly how they will restore the tradition of the trees.
