As News Channel 7’s Marianna Bureau Reporter, Vanessa Nguyen is responsible for Jackson County as well as Holmes, Washington, Calhoun and Liberty County.
Vanessa graduated from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism with a degree in Broadcast News and a minor in Religion. She had different career aspirations while growing up in Savannah, Georgia. But during her junior year at UGA, she got ‘bit by the journalism bug’ and it changed everything.
Her first experience was a joint internship between WTOC and Georgia Ports Authority’s External Affairs department. She divided her time between writing for GPA’s two company publications and working with the news team.
Prior to her senior year, Vanessa left for Washington, D.C. and spent two semesters working for the Department of Defense. In her first internship with the Department of POW/MIA Office, she was responsible for writing press releases regarding the identification of missing soldiers.
“Almost three generations had passed before many of these families could say ‘goodbye’ to their loved ones. It was indescribable to see them experience closure firsthand after waiting nearly half a century to see them again. We had soldiers being identified as far back as World War II.”
Vanessa devoted her last semester of college working for NewSource 15, a weekly 30-minute show where she and her classmates did everything from reporting, writing, anchoring to producing, shooting and editing. “That was the best hands-on training I received and it solidified my decision that this was what I wanted to do.”
Born in Saigon, Vietnam, she is a second generation Vietnamese-American. Vanessa loves being a Southern girl and is a proud Georgia Bulldog (GO DAWGS!) In her spare time, she enjoys meeting new people, photography and fashion (of course!) She has a big heart for animals, especially dogs, and would also like to own a pet pig one day!
