VERNON- This week's Golden Apple award winner teaches English and Creative Writing at Vernon High School. Mrs. Bobbi Pinkston was nominated by a student, Cameron Goff, who writes: "We are not just a class, we are a community thanks to her exciting way of teaching. She is patient with mistakes, and guides the correct procedures. You'll get many teachers in this world, but only once in a lifetime do you find one like Mrs. Pinkston."

"I love teaching for the wonder of it all," said Mrs. Pinkston, spoken like a teacher who truly loves her job. And clearly, Bobbi Pinkston does. "She has about a 100 mile round-trip commute to make each day to come to work here at Vernon," said an appreciative Vernon High Principal, Brian Riviere. "We only have about 400 students in the high school, but that creates such an amazing community of students. Everyone knows everyone, there is something so special. The drive, everything, is worth it," said Mrs. Pinkston.

She is deeply dedicated to her students and her role in the classroom, one that still surprises her today. "So I never planned on being a teacher, my parents told me growing up that I should be a teacher which is really sort of funny because I liked everything. I finally realized that all those things I loved you can do in an English classroom, you can read science, you can read it kind of sprang from there," said Mrs. Pinkston.

She launched a creative writing class 3 years ago and it's a hit with students. "It's sort of this community of learners. It's very magical, everyone telling their story." Many of her students have just finished a 29,000 word novel. It's quite a feat for a high school student.

"When you go in there it's different than every other classroom, you can speak your mind if you want to and she understands you. She doesn't just understand you as a student, she understands you as an equal," said Cameron. "It's like she's another student but you still have that respect level for her," said student Lyndsae Stray. "She is really supportive as a teacher and a person, that is why I like her," said Kiley Bullock, another student.

Congratulations to Mrs. Bobbi Pinkston, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "It's always an adventure with her, you never know what you are going to get," said Tristan Costales.
