FSU College of Music. 122 N. Copeland St. Tallahassee, FL
Tallahassee, Fl. October 6-8, 2017. Florida State University College of Music and the Classical Guitar Society at FSU will be holding a weekend filled with music and education as they host performances and masterclasses from some of the country’s leading classical guitar professors and educators. Additionally, there will also be a vendor’s fair each day of the festival where guitar builders and dealers can show their finest guitars, along with a lecture on arts entrepreneurship and a panel on high school guitar instruction.
Legendary classical guitarists from around the country will be joining us as we celebrate the ties between the classical guitar and Florida State University. Each of the performers this year is an alumni from FSU’s distinguished classical guitar studio. Starting off, there will be the renowned Dr. Stephen Robinson, the first person to receive a doctorate in guitar in the entire country. His playing has been praised as "effortless virtuosity with intelligence and good taste." (The New York Times). Dr. Robinson is also a Professor of Music at Stetson University, where he founded and has directed the Guitar Program since 1983. Next will be Dr. Andrew Zohn, another alum, who now teaches at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. Dr. Zohn has been regarded as a world class performer with critics saying “Zohn…easily demonstrated how he is one of the most sought after performers on the classical guitar as his fingers deftly plucked some of the most subtle of tones on the instrument.”(The Star, Kuala Lumpur).
There will also be the acclaimed Teixeira-Akerman Duo! Made up of guitarists Robert Teixeira and Mary Akerman, who met while in graduate school at Florida State University, and decided to form a duo about 10 years ago. Since forming, they have performed regularly on established chamber music programs, colleges and university programs, and through invitations to participate in guitar festivals and recorded the cd "Music For Two Guitars". The final performer will be the esteemed Adam Holzman from the University of Texas at Austin. Since winning the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 1983, Mr. Holzman has maintained a strong presence in the classical music community. Released numerous records under the Naxos label with his playing being described as "Dazzling", "Brilliant", and "Masterful" by the New York Times.
Each of the performers will also provide public masterclasses as will last year’s competition winner, Jesus Serrano, and FSU’s legendary Professor of Guitar Bruce Holzman. There will also be additional events aside from the grand performances and in-depth masterclasses: Patrece Robinson will give a lecture on creating and sustaining a career as a guitarist, a panel of high level high school teachers from around the state will discuss teaching high school guitar, and a vendor’s fair will display the highest quality of classical guitars from numerous guitar builders and dealers.
The 2017 Florida Guitar Festival and Competition will be an amazing weekend of once again connecting excellence and Florida State University. With both nationally and internationally acclaimed performers, teachers, and presenters coming, this will be a festival worth coming to! Join us for this wondrous event and experience legends of the classical guitar.
