Destin pianist, vocalist will head jazz trio in the music of blues and jazz legend Mose Allison

Event Dates and Times

1/24/2017 - Starts: 6:30 PM
The Place in downtown Panama City
Destin pianist and vocalist Sean Dietrich will head a jazz trio in a repeat performance of the music of legendary blues and jazz artist Mose Allison who died last November. The performance will be held at The Place in downtown Panama City on Tues., Jan. 24th at 6:30 p.m. The concert is one of a series of the Gulf Jazz Society’s monthly jazz presentations.
Dietrich is adept at interpreting Allison’s, nimble jazz piano style, and sardonic, bluesy songs, in his unique, distinctive jazz and blues style. His performances were described as being "delivered in a casual conversational way with a melodic southern accented tone that has a pitch and range ideally suited to his idiosyncratic phrasing, laconic approach and ironic sense of humour."
Dietrich will be accompanied by Bassist Steve Gilmore and Drummer Charles Pagano.
Allison wrote some 150 songs. He is best known for singing darkly humorous songs like “You’re Mind is on Vacation,” “Don’t Worry About a Thing” and “Parchman Farm.”
A Kansas City native, Sean Dietrich grew up playing and singing Gospel music in the church from as early as he can remember. Sean has received national recognition for his musical and vocal talents, placing in the Phillips National Jazz Piano Competition, performing on NPR, PBS, and other colorful venues, and with some of the finest musicians in the country. He has performed at several GJS functions over the past few years.
The Place restaurant offers a full bar and a menu that includes hamburgers, a variety of sandwiches, salads, and seafood. Limited seating. Please call for reservations.
Reservations can be made by contacting Larry at 784-2106, or Bob at 258-4022. Tickets are $10 for GJS members and $12 for others. The Place is located at 429 Harrison in downtown Panama City (next to the Martin Theater).

The Florida Department of Health in Bay County’s Healthy Bay division will be offering four new Diabetes Prevention Program, DPP, classes in the beginning of 2017. Classes will be at different times, days, and locations to allow more people to participate. DPP is a yearlong lifestyle change program. An independent review of DOH-Bay’s program found that participants achieved weight and physical activity goals. DOH-Bay’s DPP is pending CDC accreditation.
DPP reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 58%. The goal of the program is for participants to lose seven-percent of their body weight and exercise for 150 minutes per week. There are 16 weekly core courses and six monthly follow-up sessions. Participants learn strategies for incorporating physical activity into daily life and eating healthy.
Risks for prediabetes include:
ü Having a baby weighing more than 9 pounds at birth.
ü Family history of diabetes.
ü Being overweight or obese.
ü Physical inactivity.

An employee with diabetes costs $13,700, 2.3 times higher than an employee without diabetes. The return on investment is $55,000 over 10 years when DPP educated employees prevent their progression to Type 2 diabetes.
DOH-Bay also offers evidence-based educational programs to help those living with diabetes manage their disease. An independent review of the program by the Ounce of Prevention found the program to be successful with reduction in A1C scores of over one third of a point during the review period. The program is accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Class offerings include:
· Diabetes Self-Management Education
· Medical Nutrition Therapy
· Insulin Pump Management
· Gestational Diabetes Consultation and Support
· Living Well Program
· Type 2 Diabetes Support Group
