HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – Base officials initiated Hurricane Condition 3 at 5:30 p.m. today to prepare for the possible arrival of Hurricane Isaac and winds exceeding 50 knots/57.6 mph within 48 hours. Hurricane Condition 3 is a level of warning used by the Air Force to assist commanders in preparing their units for storm response actions.
As a normal precaution, Sunday the base evacuated the majority of its aircraft to Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.
Base leadership has also ordered the evacuation of the Family Campground (FAMCAMP) no later than 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27. No other mandatory evacuation orders for personnel have been made yet, but base leadership continues to monitor the weather conditions, and is in communication with local Emergency Operations Centers.
Hurlburt will open on-base shelters at 8 a.m. Monday. All FAMCAMP evacuees and DoD ID cardholders affected by the mandatory evacuation in Santa Rosa County may use the on-base shelters. The check-in point for the on-base shelters is Commando Fitness Center (Building 90232) at 452 Cody Avenue, and shelter managers can be reached at 884-4412 to answer questions. Santa Rosa County has ordered evacuation for Zones A and B beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. If you are unsure if you are affected by the Santa Rosa County evacuation order, please visit http://santarosa.roktech.net/ags/evac/ and enter your address.
Pets are not permitted in the Hurlburt Field shelters, but the Visitors Quarters still have approximately 50 rooms available. These rooms may be reserved on a first come, first served basis, and the charges will include a pet cleaning fee. Call 884-7115, option 8, for a reservation if interested.
No other mandatory evacuation orders for personnel have been made yet, but base leadership continues to monitor the weather conditions, and is in communication with local Emergency Operations Centers.
Normal duty hours are currently in effect; however, should the decision be made to release all non-mission-essential personnel, that information will be sent though the members’ chain of command.
All members assigned to Hurlburt Field are advised to use Monday to finalize their personal preparations for the storm. The Hurlburt Field Commissary will be open Monday, Aug. 27, in order for personnel to ensure their hurricane survival kits are completely stocked.
