The Time to Prepare for Hurricanes is Now

Experts say you need to be prepared to spend 72hours by yourself... without the help of 1st responders after a hurricane.

Now with hurricane season just 10 days away it is time to get your hurricane survival kit ready.

For Panama City Beach resident Melanie Manning, having a 6 year old certainly keeps her on the go. And being a single mom she knows with hurricane season coming she has to be prepared.

''I think we are pretty prepared…I actually used to work for the American Red Cross, so we were pretty keyed into hurricane season and being prepared. I hope our house will pass the test."

Which if history is a gauge... her house.... built in the 1960s, should be O.K. although it is not far from the Gulf.

"It has definitely with stood the hurricanes…the cinder blocks and the terrazzo floor…I have actually stayed here during some hurricanes."

But when the next storm threatens this family... they have Alabama on their mind to stay with family.

"We would probably just get in the car and go. We would not be one of those people to ride it out and have a hurricane party."

"Obviously, in any hurricane survival kit we are going to need things like extra batteries and a flashlight, bug spray, also a weather radio is very important, but don't forget about my friend Katie Mac here…she is going to need something for the kit. What do you got?"
"Dumbo and my book."
"Excellent…lets go ahead…we are all set!"

Having a basic kit is important, but remember specific items to keep children entertained, pets comfortable, and any important medications you might need. You can get the essentials for any kit usually for under $100 which can be a small price to pay for the piece of mind that you and your family are prepared.

Now is the time to get your kit together. For a complete list of everything you need just go to the tropical page on our website here at and look for the 'Hurricane Preparedness Links' on the right hand side.
