Backpack for Kids Christmas packing

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Some people in Jackson County got up a little early Friday morning to spread Christmas cheer by filling backpacks with food.

It was a full house as Backpack for Kids volunteers filled nearly 600 bags with food for hungry children in the area.

There were close to 30 volunteers there from several different organizations, including a robotics club and local churches.

The program hosts several packing days throughout the year, but volunteers said Christmas is their biggest event.

"You're packing for 21 days and it's not just an evening and a weekend meal," volunteer Anita Halling said. "it's meals throughout the day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so it's a huge packing."

Backpack for Kids volunteers encourage everyone to get involved with local food drives.

The next packing will be the first Friday in January.
