Bay Virtual School receives recognition

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A local online schooling option for students was recently recognized for its success.

Shelly Rouse, the Principal of Bay Virtual School, said the governor recognized the program for being in the top ten percent in the state for science achievement.

The science classes are offered for Kindergarten through 12th grade students.

Bay Virtual students have the ability to communicate with teachers online, over the phone, or even in person during open houses or scheduled meet-ups.

Rouse also believes support for the students is crucial for the program's success.

"We sit down with the parents individually and the students and we talk about the importance of parents being a 'learning coach' and I really do think that that's a really big part of why our students are successful as the parent support that our students receive," Rouse said.

She believes lessons learned in other courses, such as writing, have helped students succeed in the science program.
