Education fund established for Vernon High School student

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Vernon High School senior Dana Douglas has always dreamed of going to college--a plan her mother Alma Douglas fully supported.

"That's always been one of the things she's put in me, going to college, get my degree so I can make something of my life and make her proud like she's always wanted me to do and I've always wanted to do as well," Dana said.

Dana's mother and aunt were both killed in a car crash Saturday, but Dana wants to honor her mother's wishes by furthering her education.

"I'm gonna finish up my AA at Chipola and then probably transfer to FSU in Panama City or Gulf Coast after I finish there," Dana said.

Her VHS family is coming together to make sure Dana is able to go to school wherever and study whatever she wants.

"All we wanted to do at that point was help ensure that she had the ability to go on to college or career training," Vernon High School Principal Brian Riviere. "You know, that was all she [Alma] wanted for Dana, was to ensure that she had that track set for her and nothing would deviate from that."

It's not just her college education the donations will help pay for.

"Senior trip, senior announcements, a letterman jacket, those are things that children are going to need and are entitled to and we didn't want this tragedy to be something that kept those things from Dana," Riviere said.

Dana said she's grateful for all the love and support her community has shown her. Now, she's asking everyone to show that same kindness to each other every day.

"Hold their loved ones tight as much as possible because you never know when it'll be the last time you'll see them," Dana said. "Some things have broken apart, but it was able to come back together."

If you would like to help out with Dana's education fund, you can mail or drop off donations at Vernon High School, located at 3232 Moss Hill Road, Vernon, Florida 32462. Riviere said they will give you a receipt for your donation.

Bling Bling Blessings Mobile Boutique will be at VHS on January 9 and 10 for high school and middle school students to shop. A portion of sales will be donated to the Dana Douglas Educational Trust Fund.
