BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - If you haven't already gotten your flu shot, local health professional believe you should because experts say this flu season will be a bad one.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there is already widespread flu activity in Georgia, Oklahoma, Louisana and Maryland. The CDC looks at Australia's flu season when predicting the United States'. Australia's flu season has seen record-high number of flu cases.
According to the Florida Department of Health, 15-40 percent of the population will get the flu every year.
"We don't know if the symptoms are going to be worse this season or not. We don't know because once you get the flu it decreases your immune system. Once it decreases your immune system you can get something called vascular bacterial infection, like pneumonia, you can get meningitis, you can get different types which can be fatal in some cases," said Dr. Ahmed Rezk of Rainbow Pediatrics.
"That's why it's so important to get your flu shot vaccine. Not only to protect ourselves but those in the community that are immuno-compromised or more susceptible to getting sick. Such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, so it's just so important to get your flu vaccine," said Pam McGowen a nurse practitioner at the Florida Department of Health, Bay County.
To find out where to get a flu shot the Florida Department of Health suggests you contact your doctor or your local county health department.
