Florida State University student dead after apparent party

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CAPITAL NEWS SERVICE) - Andrew Coffey, 20, a Florida State University student and 2015 graduate of Pompano Beach High School has been confirmed dead after what appeared to be a party.

He was found unresponsive Friday morning at a house just a mile from the FSU campus.

Beer bottles and trash littered the yard and rear deck. Neighbors said an unusually loud party took place Thursday night.

John Broderick, a neighbor, said he thought 20 people were at the party.

Coffey was reportedly a pledge for the Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity.

A statement from the University said in part:

“We do not yet have details surrounding the passing today of student Andrew Coffey, but we will work closely with the Tallahassee Police Department.”

A neighbor two doors down said he could frequently hear parties at the house.

“Just loud talking. You know like when a bunch of people get together. Just loud talking,” neighbor Oliver Clemons said.

The national office of the fraternity said all operations are suspended.

The body was found Friday just after 10 a.m. Police did not confirm the death until 10 p.m. Friday night.
