PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - With lows expected to be below freezing for the first couple days of 2018, home and garden officials are encouraging residents to prepare their pipes and plants to handle the chill.
"First thing you need to do is take an assessment of your house, of any exposed pipes, any exposed plant material. So if you've got exposed plant material, you need to cover them," Garden expert Richard Ramsey said.
You can cover your plants or provide a heat lamp for them, to keep them warm.
Officials at Home Depot say there are plenty of products to help you take care of your pipes and plants, like foam pipe insulation and plant blankets.
"Nobody wants a flooded house with bursted pipes or not to be able to take a shower in the morning, so it's very important to take all kinds of procedures to cover your pipes and keep them safe in this cold weather that we're having," Ramsey said.
While we may not be used to freezing temperatures, Ramsey says taking precautions is easy.
"All of this is doable, from the light with a heat lamp bulb to just zipping the tape off of the tubes that cover your pipes, it's very very simple," he said.
Officials also want to remind our viewers to take care of the plants or pipes in outdoor sheds and other structures, along with their homes.
