Hundreds come out to Marry Marianna

MARIANNA, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Monday night is one many locals probably won't forget-- it's the night Jackson County married the City of Marianna.

"It takes more than just a few people to have a wedding," Marianna Municipal Development Director Kay Dennis said. "It takes a community."

Hundreds showed up to the Marry Marianna Celebration. The reception featured food, vendors, and games.

"A lot of people have come up to me and thanked me and said it's fun," Dennis said. "They're glad everybody can come together and make a difference in the community together."

The main reason behind the event was to have people share their ideas about how to develop the West End of Marianna.

Members of the American Planning Association attended the celebration, speaking with locals about what matters to them.

"We're very fortunate to have them here, there's probably over 200 years of experience combined," Marianna City Manager Jim Dean said.

"The team had a big map and they had dots all over the map showing where everybody lived," Dennis said.

For those who live or work on the West End, they said change has been a long time coming.

"We'd really love to see some more businesses and economic activity out on Pennsylvania Avenue and so I'm excited to see this much interest in seeing that area grow," Jackson County Ag Extension Director Doug Mayo said.

The planning team will also attend two public meetings at the Ag Extension Office on Penn Avenue. Those meetings are Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
