BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Besides trying to protect yourself while you're out and about, the Bay County Sheriff's Office offers a holiday home check.
So whether you're out shopping or working for hours, or go out of town for a few days, the sheriff's office says they are there when you may not be.
"If you're going to be traveling and you're worried about your house being empty for a period of time. It could be two days or it could be a week. It doesn't matter, just call us here at the Bay County Sheriff's office," said Ruth Corley with BCSO.
To get this free service, call the Bay County Sheriff's Office and ask to be transfered to dispatch.
"Our number is 747-4700 and we can switch you over to dispatch. That's who you need to ask for when you call and tell the person that answers up front at the desk, that you want to get the holiday home check. You want your home to get special checks by a representative by the Bay County Sheriff's Office while you're gone and so you have a little piece of mind while you're gone," Corley explained.
They'll ask you for information including your name, address and emergency contact, if you have any neighbors or friends you're also expecting to keep an eye on your place, and what vehicles they can expect to see out front.
"Especially if you're going to be leaving between Christmas and New Years and have some new things in your house, you definitely want a second set of eyes," Corley said.
