Panama City Fire Department honors members for saving lives

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Each year the Panama City Fire Department honors its members for the efforts they've made throughout the year. This year the list of awards was quite long.

Among those receiving Life Saving Awards was Todd Flitcraft. He saved the life of an elderly neighbor who had lost her bearing after her house caught fire.

Four other Life Saving Awards were given to other department members along with unit citations for their actions in also saving the lives of fire victims.

"We're here to take care of our community, to give back to our community," Fire Chief Alexander Baird of the Panama City Fire Department said. "At some point you got to give back to the employees as well. When you save a life that means a lot. And it's not an award that we hand out everyday, it's something, maybe once in a lifetime, you might see that award given out to somebody."

Five new firefighters were also sworn in at Tuesday's ceremony. This brings the Panama City Fire Department back up to full staffing levels.
