Pilot in Wednesday's plane crash identified

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The pilot who died in Wednesday's plane crash was identified by investigators from the Holmes County Sheriff's Office.

They said Clarence Eddis Bowers of Ponce de Leon was the longtime manager of the Tri County Airport.

First responders found his small single engine Cherokee Piper plane engulfed in flames in a field near the airport runway Wednesday just before 5 p.m.

Firefighters on scene put out the fire.

Nearby witnesses said Bowers took the plane for a test flight and was gone for a couple minutes when they noticed the plane crashed.

Crews with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board arrived Thursday and are taking over the investigation.
