SOUTHPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Two Southport Elementary students are asking for toys this Christmas, but not for themselves.
Friends since they were babies, third graders Ellie Batyski and Hannah Buchenhorst are spearheading a school-wide toy drive to give to kids in need.
Ellie said she got the idea to start the toy drive last school year and wanted to continue it this year with her friend Hannah. Ellie said she was inspired by a friend who started a toy drive in the past.
"I asked the principal if we could do it, and then she thought about it overnight, then she said 'Yes,'" Ellie said.
Students and parents can drop off unopened toys in the school's front office underneath the Christmas tree.
The toys will be given to the Salvation Army.
"It's been two days so far and we have got seven toys," Hannah said.
Ellie told us she wants to continue collecting toys for kids in need every year, even when she reaches middle school.
