JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Springhill Landfill in Campbellton has hosted educational tours for several years and Thursday's visit from Riverside Elementary School students marked its 50th tour.
"We've had thousands of kids out here since this program started," Waste Management Public Sector Services Manager Ronnie Bell said. "It's just a good program."
Students toured the landfill and the wetland area. They even trekked all the way to the top of the highest hill.
Inside, they learned about the landfill's layers, by making their own edible landfills.
"The biggest thing I think comes out of it for the kids is the questions they take back," Bell said. "Not only to their teachers and the folks they work within the schools but also their parents."
The celebration was also in honor of the facility's latest Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Re-Certification. Springhill Landfill staff completed a rigorous review process to receive the honor.
