PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Gulf Coast womens basketball team showed no signs of a long layoff between games, and simply dismantled Broward in the quarterfinals of the Region 8, or State Tournament Thursday, 92-49.
Gulf Coast started off shooting hot, led by Shayla Bennett who connected on three early three point shots, helping to give the Commodores a 28-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Bennett, and others continued the hot shooting with several shots falling from beyond the arc, and by the time the game reached the half, it was over, with Gulf Coast sporting a 44-18 lead.
In the second half, with head Coach Roonie Scovel going to her bench, the Commodores continued to pour it on, pulling away to the eventual 43 point win, taking their record to 24-2, and putting them into the state semi's Friday against Florida Southwestern at 3 eastern time.
"Well we're just trying to win one, win one and move on to the next one." coach Scovel told me shortly after the game. "It was a big victory, nobody got hurt. We got to play a lot of people, everybody played and like you said we got to rest some legs a little bit, so hopefully that will help us tomorrow. But it was a big win. To have a big layoff and come out, we shot the ball well and we executed very well. We've got a few things we'll have to do better tomorrow. But we're just excited to advance, to win and advance. That's all it's all about at this point."
