MARIANNA, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Marianna walked away from its home wrestling meet victorious, defeating visiting South Walton in the finals of the inaugural 1A District 1 Duals.
Unlike other invitational meets in the early stretch of the season, the field was comprised entirely of area teams. Bay, Bozeman, Mosley, Rocky Bayou, Rutherford, and South Walton made the trek to Marianna.
This event differentiates itself as a team competition, rather than crowning individual champions in each class.
Marianna is pleased not only to emerge victorious, but to simply be hosting the event in the first place.
"Like at the end of the season tournaments, we typically go down to Panama City or the surrounding area. But for duals, in the past, Marianna's had dual tournaments before," head coach Todd Larson said. "When we had the opportunity, the ability to go to state through dual tournaments, it just seemed like a natural fit for Marianna to be able to host an event like this."
Among the standouts, Cole Maddox of Marianna went undefeated in four matches, while Seth Weinthal, Ethan Pickren, Joseph Gajewski, Gunnar Nebel, Harris Barton, and Mason Levasseur all went 3-0 for the Seahawks.
