PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG) - Chipola College has a new face for the men’s basketball team.

Donnie Tyndall, who is heading down from the Detroit Pistons organization. Tyndall is on show cause penalty with the NCAA, however, he can coach in other leagues, and despite the adversity, Chipola athletic director and head baseball coach, Jeff Johnson says Tyndall is just what this program needs.

“We are extremely excited and thrilled to have him here with us, with his resume. He’s won at every step he has been at, and that’s the thing that really stood out for me. From a young age, at the junior college level at St. Katherine’s. At the assistant level, he won. Then, when he got the head coaching jobs, he won at Moorehead State, won at Southern Miss, and Tennessee. You look even further than that, at the NBA developmental league. He won that league this year as well. Very impressed with his personal relationship skills, his maturity, which I think is very important for us here at Chipola,” said Johnson.

Coach Tyndall has already started working on those relationships. He says that during his 16 hour drive down from Grand Rapids, Michigan, 15 of those hours were spent on the phone with players and recruits.

“It’s an opportunity to do what I love, and that’s influence and impact young people’s lives and coach college basketball. I think this is a great opportunity. In my opinion, it’s the best junior college situation in America. Plays in the best conference, in the best region in the country. It’s like the SEC of junior colleges, which is exciting. I know Dr. Clemons and Coach Johnson have a great vision for our program and where they want it to be, and I’m very excited and humbled to be the head coach here,” said Tyndall.
