WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG) - The South Walton Fire District chief is asking for assistance in finding a different kind of ground covering for people to use in their yards.

Fire Chief Ryan Crawford said part of the reason the Mussett Bayou Road wildfire got so bad was because of natural ground coverings, such as pine needles.

He wants the planning department's help in coming up with alternatives that homeowners can use.

"There was clearly a nexus from this fire at Musset Bayou where homes long range, downwind from the fire ignited because of the landscaping that was around the homes, embers would land in them, they caught on fire, the home was destroyed and there's an opportunity here to overcome that," said Crawford.

No word yet on when the new rules will start go into effect.
