The Commodores look ahead to the start of the season
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -The Gulf Coast Commodore’s Men’s Basketball team is closing out a three week holiday break and getting ready for their first game January 20, 2021. A long awaited start for the ‘Dores as they haven’t seen an actual game since march and missed out on the national tournament in Hutchinson, KS due to the season being cancelled for the pandemic, but for head coach, Phil Gaffney, who missed a large chunk of that 2020 run due to a heart attack leading to open heart surgery, he is ready now more than ever to get things rolling.
“We start practicing tomorrow, January 4th, so we are super excited about that. The guys have been gone for three and a half weeks, which is the longest I’ve ever not coached or done anything with anybody, so it was good. I’m rested and relaxed. I think they’re rested and relaxed. We’re ready to get after it on January 20th,” said Coach Gaffney.
Coach Gaffney has been waiting for this season longer than anyone else.
“I haven’t really coached since last January, coached in a game, so getting ready and the anticipation, it’ll be a year between games for me. That’s a long time between games, so, for me, personally, it’s just a great experience. In this COVID-19 time, we’re all glad to, not just have our jobs, but in my case, I’m glad to be alive,” said Coach Gaffney.
That first game on January 20, 2021 will tip off at 7:30 at Gulf Coast as the Commodores host Florida Coastal Prep. Monday will mark the first day of practice, and all players must test negative before getting back to work.
