BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Four Bay County residents have been charged and are accused of trying to defraud the CARES Act.

Bay County Sheriff’s deputies said they opened up an investigation after an audit by the Bay County Budget Office and the Bay County Comptroller.

The paperwork stated Renatta Mathis needed financial assistance due to the pandemic through the CARES Act, and Eric Betties posed as her landlord. Betties allegedly claimed that Mathis was behind on rent and needed help. Officials say this scheme happened last November.

Mathis reportedly met with investigators and confessed she discussed the scheme with Betties and they collaborated to defraud the program.

She also reportedly said she helped Mary Beach get in touch with Betties to commit the same kind of fraud. Betties then allegedly informed Antoinette Dawson about the scheme and she filled out paperwork to defraud the program.

Betties and Mathis were both charged with scheme to defraud. Beach and Dawson were both charged with grand theft.
