Man facing felony charges in connection with deadly crash in Walton County
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Panama City Beach man is facing felony charges after a deadly crash in Walton County in February.
Walton County Sheriff’s Deputies say Lawrence Brenton Cowart, 32, turned himself in Tuesday. He was booked into Walton County’s Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.
Deputies say Cowart was driving a white four-door Porshe more than 20 miles over the posted speed limit when he hit the back of a truck, killing the 59-year-old driver from Ohio.
The crash happened on Highway 98 in Walton County west of Watersound Parkway on February 12th, just before 2 a.m. The road was shut down for hours while Florida Highway Patrol Troopers investigated.
According to troopers, Cowart was under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication the night of the crash.
Cowart has been released on a $25,000 bond and is awaiting trial.

An Ohio man is dead after a crash in Walton County.
Florida Highway Patrol Troopers say the crash happened on Highway 98 west of Watersound Parkway Friday, around 2 a.m.
Troopers say a 32-year-old man from Panama City was driving a Porche along 98. They say that man failed to slow down, rear-ending a Chevy pickup truck driven by a 59-year-old Ohio man.
Walton County Sheriff’s Deputies say the driver of the truck was ejected during the crash. They also say after the impact, the truck caught fire.
The man in the truck died from his injuries. The man inside the Porche had minor injuries.
Deputies say charges are pending the investigation.

Multiple agencies are reporting a fatal two-vehicle crash in Walton County early Friday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the incident happened sometime around 2 a.m. on Highway 98 near North Watersound Parkway when a white Porche failed to slow down for a blue Chevy pickup truck and collided with the back of it. Troopers confirm the driver of the truck suffered fatal injuries.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office is also on the scene. Deputies say there are delays with eastbound traffic on Highway 98, but due to the crash’s proximity to Emerald Coast Middle School, they are unable to redirect all traffic. They are suggesting a detour using County Road 395 and County Road 30A.
