Liam Kearns is spending his summer with the Roots
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Roots, center midfielder, Liam Kearns has been on the pitch since kindergarten.
“I started playing when I was six years old,” said Liam. “I’ve just been playing ever since. I haven’t missed a season since I was probably six. It’s been my favorite thing to do, ever since I was little.”
As a kid, Liam looked up to the former developmental soccer team in the area, making his chance to play for the Roots a little sweeter.
”When I was a little kid, I used to watch the Panama City Pirates play all the time. When I heard about this team, I was really excited to be able to be a part of it and be able to represent my hometown.”
“I coached Liam, probably for about six years because I had him in club first, and then he ended up coming over to Arnold for his last two years, junior and senior year,” said Roots owner and Arnold boy’s soccer coach, Jonathan Hammond. “It was a pleasure coaching him.”
Being back on the field with his former Arnold coaches Cecchini and Hammond, was something he didn’t expect, but made the decision to play this summer a little easier.
”When I first heard that they were going to be them running the show around here, it was really cool because I never thought I would be able to play for them again, so being able to play for them again has really been a pleasure. I’m really liking it.”
Hammond is really liking it too. Not only do locals like Liam contribute on the field, but they also bring the name to life, coming back playing for their Roots.
”It’s cool. It all came back around, and to have those guys playing, in their hometown, in front of their family and friends, it’s pretty cool.”
The Roots are now 1-8-2 and will head to Mississippi Saturday to take on Hattiesburg.
