Tigers on the road in Orlando for some 7 on 7 competition
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -A big trip is under way for the Blountstown football team, or at least a good chunk of that squad. Coach Beau Johnson, his coaches and 20 players setting out on the road Thursday heading to Orlando for a twenty team 7 on 7 event known as “Throwdown in O’Town”. Coach Beau telling us Thursday this kind of summer trip helps the team when it plays long road trips come the fall.
“So we’re going to Georgia a couple of times in the regular season this year.” coach Johnson told me via Zoom Thursday afternoon. “And so going down to the Orlando area to be in a twenty team 7 on 7 tournament is really neat for our kids. We’re excited. And another thing, it’s about getting kids exposure. If we run into a team down there that has a receiver that’s going to Florida, or Florida State or UCF, and there’s somebody there to watch them, and one of our kids shows out, it’s a chance to get seen.”
The coach says he’s not big on these types of competitions, in fact this will be the only one they take part in this summer.
“We’re gonna try to throw the ball a little more this year.” Johnson said. “We’ve got some weapons that we want to us. And we just feel like it’s a great tool. It’s not something that we want to do all the time. So we kind of put all of our eggs into this one weekend for 7 on 7. We don’t feel like really missing out on workouts and team stuff to go do 7 on 7. We kind of scheduled this and it’s gonna be fun. I don’t know how good we’ll be at this 7 on 7 stuff. We’re gonna run our system and run our defense. We’re not gonna run a bunch of junk stuff just to try and win the 7 on 7. We do feel like we’ve got some athletes out on the edge.”
The Tigers will play four games Friday and that will determine their seeding for play on Saturday.
