PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -The bay county commission voted on the proposed millage tax rates.

According to Commissioner Robert Carroll, the millage rates have remained the same over the past five years.

Carroll added it is typical for them to evaluate the budget at this time of year.

“Ideally, there’s a list of projects and vehicles and equipment that need to be purchased. Some of those we defer another year or so. But we’re grateful that we’re able to keep that rate the same,” Robert Carroll, commissioner for District Two, said. “I mean, it’s easy to raise taxes, so it is easy to get more money. But we all have to pay that tax, and we got to be mindful of it. Believe it or not, there are people that still are not in their homes after Hurricane Michael.”

Carroll added it is typical for them to evaluate the budget at this time of year.

During the meeting commissioners also discussed setting new records for bed tax for this year’s tourism season. The bed tax is also known a the Bay County Tourist Development Tax is a 5% tax collected within a special jurisdiction within the Bay County on short-term/ vacation rentals.

“We are keeping people employed keeping people with their jobs and occupations. We are grateful for the people who are coming here because if you have a higher bed tax you have a half set higher sales tax that sales tax goes towards our roadways infrastructure therefore that’ll be increased as well,” Carroll said.

Carroll also discussed traffic within the county on Back Beach Road, he said it is starting to slow down since we have moved past the Fourth of July.

“It all depends on what people are doing their movements. But traffic does come with a price but it’s more tourist keeps our people employed, keeps tax dollars coming into my county,” Carroll said.

Carroll noted that you can also take the parkway to avoid congestion on Back Beach.
