Summertime Learning with GCSC’s STEAM Program
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - From little learners to big builders, exploring new things is what summer is all about. To help with that, Gulf Coast State College offers a variety of youth programs to keep kids’ minds active throughout the summer.
Executive Director of Community Engagement Katie McCurdy said, “Those students get to participate in all the areas of STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art, and math.”
Rotating the topics each week, this week the focus was all things weather.
McCurdy said, “They are always very interested in what is going on around them, so it was great for them to get to experience why those things happen with thunderstorms, showers, hurricane, tornadoes.”
From studying the material, creating the experiments, and presenting their knowledge, campers breezed through each station.
“The kids get the hands-on experience and then they are also getting that technology piece. So, they were learning how to build stuff in Canva and then of course building different things for the engineering class. It is really important that we keep the kids engaged over the summer so that they don’t lose any of the skills that they learn throughout the school year. That is why we really pride ourselves on offering these camps,” said McCurdy.
Camps at Gulf Coast State College are offered all the way up until July 18 and will go to 10th grade.
