Students record messages of hope for struggling peers
Wildly Kind brings message recording project to high school
PORTLAND, Ore. (InvestigateTV) — A nonprofit focused on building community through acts of kindness is inspiring hope and positivity across Oregon through anonymous voice messages.
Wildly Kind, an organization dedicated to building connection and compassion, has placed transformed phone booths and open mic stations throughout Portland where people can record encouraging messages for others who may be struggling.
“It’s been amazing. After we did our first art exhibit and one of the videos went viral and it’s just absolutely amazing to see the comments, to see the reach that it’s making,” Kayla Lamoreaux, executive director of Wildly Kind, said.
The messages inspire hope.
“Life is really, really tough, but I want you to know that you’re amazing and beautiful,” one anonymous voice said.
“I promise, it’s going to get better,” another said.
Students answer the call
For the first time, the nonprofit brought its mission to a school setting at Milwaukie High School. Nearly 90 students participated in a single day, recording messages in the school lobby for fellow students who may be silently struggling.
Students offered words of encouragement and shared personal experiences. Some spoke about overcoming difficulties, while others opened up about their own grief and challenges.
“People need support out there and a lot of help, no matter what happens,” one student said about the project.
‘Week of Kindness’ activities
Xena Guitron, the school’s youth essential coordinator, said students also participated in a “Week of Kindness” that included sharing positivity through written messages and handing out flowers.
“Bringing mental health to the forefront should open up conversations,” Guitron said.
The school shared the recordings during a special family night and organizers said the impact was particularly powerful for parents.
