850 GOOD NEWS: DeFuniak Springs family creates Down syndrome playgroup
Limitless 21 connects local children and families with Down syndrome
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A DeFuniak Springs family created a playgroup called Limitless 21 to connect local children and families with Down syndrome after their daughter, Sophia, was born with the condition.
Sophia’s family describes her as sweet and sassy. Since the day she was born, she has changed their lives, according to her family.
“She’ll be two in November, and she just happens to have down syndrome and of course that’s not the only part of who she is, it is a part of who she is, but it doesn’t define who she is,” a member of the Langston family said.
After looking for a Down syndrome community, the family was inspired to create Limitless 21, a playgroup that gives children a chance to connect while helping families build a community of their own.
“Through Sophia God has given me purpose to build a community and that is what limitless 21 is for. It’s for individuals who have down syndrome to get together but also the families because you have the husbands that may want to connect because we have a child who has down syndrome or our kids and their siblings,” a member of the Langston family said.
Sophia’s story is also making an impact on her older brother, who chose to represent his sister on the baseball field.
“They get to choose their number and he choose 21 because the three copies of the 21st chromosome is what down syndrome is so he actually ended up choosing the number 21 so just seeing the impact Sophia’s made not just on our family but others too,” a member of the Langston family said.
The local Down syndrome community says it appreciates the impact.
“A lot of people reach out and say that they’ve really appreciated the play groups because it’s given them the opportunity to meet people they wouldn’t have met who are local to them,” a member of the Langston family said.
The family hopes Limitless 21 will continue to grow, with more playdates and more opportunities to build awareness and connection within the Down syndrome community.
The family is gaining national attention from the National Down Syndrome Society. Sophia will be featured on a jumbotron in Times Square Saturday, helping kick off New York City’s Buddy Walk.
