LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 100 million Americans are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
The Florida Department of Health hosted a 5K run/walk for diabetes awareness at the Bailey Bridge Saturday.
In Bay County, there are about 19,000 people living with diabetes. According to experts, only about 14,000 people know they have it.
Employees with the Florida Department of Health say more than 50,000 people in Bay County have a condition known as pre-diabetes.
"Screening for pre-diabetes is really important because we know from several studies that have been released that doing something about the pre-diabetes in terms of changing to healthy lifestyles, you can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes," Jo Coleville, Co-chair of the World Diabetes Day Bridge Walk, said.
Pancare of Florida and other organizations also participated at the event.
