PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla (WJHG/WECP) - More than 80 cold stunned sea turtles are recovering at Gulf World Marine Institute due to this prolonged cold snap.
Experts say when the water gets below 50 degrees, the reptiles can become shocked. Florida Fish and Wildlife is working with the United States Geological Survey and Gulf World to search, rescue, transport and rehabilitate the turtles.
They expect to rescue about 300 over the next several days.
Gulf World officials say the animals are being examined and placed in warmer water. We're told a majority of the turtles will be tagged and released as early as next week.
