Alaqua Animal Refuge offers free adoptions and advice for bringing home pets
Alaqua Animal Refuge and Bissell Pet Foundation are trying to give every homeless pet hope this holiday season.
"We are looking for forever homes for all of our animals and we are taking the opportunity and waving all of our adoption fees for anything over six months," Alissa Parsons, the Outside Manager for Alaqua Animal Refuge, said.
Alaqua Volunteer Lisa Snow says adopting a rescue pet is not only a good thing to do for the community, but also for the animals.
"You can go to a pet store and buy, but when you adopt you create a space for another animal who is in a displaced situation," Snow said.
While the season of giving may seem like a great time to give a pet a new home, there are things you should think about before you adopt.
"Giving a pet to someone, maybe not the best idea, but getting a pet for you or your family is great, but one thing to remember is they're not just a gift. They are a lifetime commitment," Snow said.
Parsons added, patience is key for welcoming a new animal into your home.
"They're going to take time, you know puppies are great and kittens are great, but there is a process of potty training and just know that it might take a little while," Parsons said.
But the people at Alaqua say, all the work is worth it.
"They need lots of exercise and lots of love, but in return, they get a lot," Snow said.
