Bay County commissioners thank local lawmakers

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The 2019 legislative session ended Saturday in Tallahassee with millions of dollars going toward Hurricane Michael recovery. Bay County commissioners held a press conference Monday morning thanking local legislators for their hard work.

County commissioner Philip "Griff" Griffitts said, "We want to especially thank our delegation and what they did in Tallahassee."

Representative Jay Trumbull said, "So the total number is a little over $200 million in total funding for hurricane-impacted areas."

This after the Florida Legislature finally passed a bill Saturday to help Hurricane Michael recovery.

Griffitts said, "This is a big victory for Bay County, this is a huge undertaking by our delegation. Our legislative delegation have done an amazing job bringing this type of money to Bay County and the hurricane-affected areas."

If the governor signs the new budget, $115 million will address housing issues, more than $30 million will go to Bay County, and $12 million of that will go to Bay District Schools.

But while local officials say the hundreds of millions of dollars that will be used for hurricane recovery is a step in the right direction... they also say there's still much more to be done.

Trumbull said, "There's a incredible need for funding. The state only has so much which is why I think its incredibly important and honestly a travesty the fact that the federal government hasn't stepped up to the plate."

Trumbull says Governor Ron DeSantis has fifteen days from the time the bill was passed to officially sign off on it.

As an added resource for recovery, World Renew is in town to determine the unmet needs of Bay County residents. They invite people to meet with them until May 17.

World Renew will be available at the following walk-in centers for you to meet with you personally and gather your data so Rebuild Bay County knows how to help.
