PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Nearly a year after Hurricane Michael, Bay District Schools is taking another step toward recovery.

The storm destroyed the gym at Jinks Middle School, and it had to be completely torn down.
On Tuesday, locals gathered to break ground on a new gym. When finished, it'll not only serve the school but also be used for community events.
"We want to look at what we can do with our facilities to make them more community-oriented. So I can see in the long run this will be a community center to be used for tournaments and weekend events and things like that," said Superintendent Bill Husfelt.
"The fact that we get to see the groundbreaking happen so soon after the storm for a project of this magnitude is very encouraging and it's something we're looking forward to seeing come together," said Jinks Principal Blythe Carpenter.
Construction on the project is expected to start by the end of the year and should take a year to a year and a half to complete.
