Hundreds lace up shoes for Bay Point Turkey Trot
Before indulging in plenty of turkey, cranberry sauce and pecan pie, hundreds of people laced up their running shoes and hit the pavement for the second annual Bay Point Turkey Trot.
Families and friends gathered at the Sheraton Resort in Bay Point and started the race at 8 a.m. More than 400 runners registered for this year's run, including families from across the country.
All proceeds from the 5K will go to the Wesley Burnham Foundation.
"Well it was my dad's idea," said Moriah Stice, who is running the race with her entire family. "We all like to run and we're here for Thanksgiving from Illinois and just spending some time here."
"Our foundation was started in memory of our son Wesley who passed away December 19th, 2014," said Jill Burnham. "We have two different areas of our foundation, one we sponsor preschool scholarships for tuition and also we do preschool music programs so with that music program we fund the instruments and the curriculum."
Burnham said the cost to sponsor a child for a full year of preschool costs on average 4,500. So far, the foundation has sponsored 26 children. It has also provided funds to start music program at three local preschools.
