BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - There's a scam going on that Bay County Sheriff's Officials want you to be aware of. It's called the Spanish lottery scam and it has already taken advantage of people in our area.
Bay County Sheriff's Office Officials say the Spanish lottery scam has already affected several people in the area. (MGN)
The scam picks up between November and January targeting people 55 years of age and older.
You can be contacted via mail or phone saying you've won the lottery, in many cases without having even entered.
You may then be prompted to pay a few thousand dollars to obtain your winnings--money that you will never see returned.
Inspector Paul Vecker with the Bay County Sheriff's Office said, "You can record them and you can report them. The difficult part about it is over 90 something percent of the cases cannot be cleared because a lot of them are coming from an eastern country and all these phones are fake phones or so, therefore, it's very difficult to find them and we have no authority in these foreign countries."
Vecker says two years ago Bay County citizens lost over $360,000 combined in a similar scam called romance scams.
