Thousands of people hit Walton County's beaches for Memorial Day Weekend, but rip currents led to dangerous swimming conditions.

South Walton Fire District officials say they responded to two water rescues Saturday, 16 water rescues Sunday, and six water rescues Monday. There were also 18 public assists that did not require EMS.

Of those water rescues, one was fatal.

Sunday, officials say a middle-aged man, who was not a local, drowned in the Gulf near Walton Dunes Access.

Lifeguards with South Walton Fire District say they tallied more than 43,000 people over the weekend on the seven miles of beach they patrol. They say this was the busiest weekend they've ever seen.
