Update: Explosion near Eglins's climate lab sends plume of smoke into air

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - UPDATE: Air Force officials say a fire occurred at a support building near McKinley Climatic Lab about 10am Wednesday.

The plume of smoke that contained potentially hazardous material has now dissipated.

Authorities from Eglin say there were no significant injuries.
Air Force officials say that a little before 10 a.m. Wednesday, an explosion occurred at the McKinley Climatic Lab.

According to Eglin AFB authorities, the source of smoke coming from the building has been identified as methyl chloride. Avoid contact with the smoke if possible.

No injuries have been reported, but a 1,000 foot area has been cordoned off around the facility, and the area surrounding the lab has been evacuated.

The cause of Wednesday's explosion is under investigation.
