FHP: Driver arrested after threatening a family while holding handgun

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to Florida Highway Patrol, a Panama City man was arrested after threatening a family and brandishing a handgun near East Milton Saturday afternoon.

Troopers said Gregory Welchel, 57, was driving a Cadillac Escalade and towing a white box trailer. A report said the man was brandishing a handgun and threatening a family traveling in a minivan.

The van was reportedly headed north on State Road 87 in the area of Interstate 10.

Troopers said after updated reports of the Escalade headed west on I-10 in Escambia County, troopers were able to intersect the vehicle.

They said Welchel was arrested and the handgun was found in the driver's door console.
