While most people who contract the virus are asymptomatic, one in five people develops a fever and other symptoms similar to the flu.

Fewer than one percent of people develop a serious and sometimes fatal illness as a result of the virus, and people over the age of 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk.

The Florida Department of health has recommendations to stay safe from mosquitoes, including eliminating standing water around your home and making sure to cover up with light clothing and using insect repellent.
