Florida Highway Patrol: One dead, deputy seriously injured after crash

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to Florida Highway Patrol, one woman is dead and a Holmes County deputy is seriously injured after a crash Saturday morning.

Troopers said Mellie Marell, 85, of Bonifay, was turning left onto Hospital Drive from Thomas Drive in Holmes County.

The roads are near Doctors Memorial Hospital.

We're told Zachary Neitsch, 20, a Holmes County deputy, was headed west on Thomas Drive with his emergency lights and siren activated on his marked patrol unit.

Troopers said Marell failed to yield to the right of way of Neitsch, causing the front of the patrol unit to collide with the right side of the car Marell was driving.

Charges are pending the investigation.
