FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Fort Walton Beach Fire Department unveiled a new ceremonial bell Wednesday.
The bell was first used in 1962 by the Detroit Fire Department.
In a 9/11 remembrance ceremony Wednesday the bell was rung in honor of the fallen firefighters who died at ground zero.
Gene Large, retired battalion chief of the Fort Walton Fire Department, says the bell took two years to find and several months to restore.
"All in all, a couple years at work, but to me, it means the world. So, I think it is worth every hour, every minute, and every dollar we spent on it and the fact that the community chipped in and did what they did with it I think that makes it extra special," said Large.
The bell was restored locally by National Aluminum & Alloy and Suncoast.
