Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center unveils new technology

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A new piece of medical equipment is turning operations into a work of art.

Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center in Panama City is now home to the next generation of the da Vinci Surgical System.

The new XI System is one of five robots at the hospital and one of only two da Vinci systems in northwest Florida.

Hospital officials say that the XI System is the most advanced robotic system to date.

Both surgeons and patients have a lot to look forward to with the new, less-invasive technology.

Dr. George Reiss the General Surgeon at Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center said, "The patients can recover more quickly, [with] less discomfort. That's the reason for this: same surgeries, but quicker recovery and less discomfort."

Hospital officials hope to have the system up and running by the end of the month. The two other closest da Vinci systems are in Dothan and Pensacola.
