PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Gulf World is releasing more details about the death of one of its rough-toothed dolphins.

In December, Astro died from an illness. Pathology results have come back and Astro died from a chronic case of pneumonia.

Gulf World representatives say Astro came to Gulf World in 2006 after several months of rehab in Texas, where he had stranded himself. NOAA deemed Astro non-releasable.

They say Astro had chronic, severe scoliosis. He underwent daily physical therapy, as well as laser therapy and was given pain medicine as needed. Gulf World representatives say a local chiropractor came to see him at the facility and helped with his treatment over the years.

They say signs of inflammation or infection were found during routine blood work in September. Astro reportedly showed no signs of illness and continued to eat and behave normally until early December. They say Astro did not respond to the various treatments attempted and died on December 13th.

The Gulf World management team says he was loved by guests and staff and will be greatly missed.
