High speed chase ends in crash in DeFuniak Springs

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A traffic stop initiated by the Florida Highway Patrol in Crestview Thursday morning resulted in a high-speed chase.

Troopers say they received information of a stolen vehicle that was being tracked early Thursday morning. They said when they tried to initiate a traffic stop the vehicle sped off, resulting in Troopers giving chase and contacting the Walton County Sheriff's Office to assist.

Officials say Deputies from the Walton County Sheriff's office joined the pursuit as the vehicle approached DeFuniak Springs. Troopers say they then contacted the DeFuniak Springs Police who then responded as well. Officers say they then deployed spike strips in an effort to stop the vehicle.

Troopers say the vehicle continued heading east before crashing in front of Plateful Restaurant near the intersection of U.S. Highway 331 S. Officials say the crash caused massive damage to a concrete sign base, light pole, and busted a water main, but that luckily no bystanders were hurt.

The occupants of the vehicle were transported to Healthmark Regional Medical Center to check for injuries. Officials say Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation with charges pending.
