BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Back-to-school shopping is going to be easier for many local students and their families who stopped by Living Word Church in Bay County on Saturday.

Kids were able to pick from around a thousand backpacks at the "Got Your Back" event.

"People leave here with hope and leave here knowing that their needs are being met and their kids are going to be able to start the school year off right," said Living Word Church Pastor Hayward Miller.

Each bag was filled with colored pencils, folders, and other school supplies. Event Volunteer Kayden Barfield said she knows several students whose families are spending a lot of money to repair their homes after Hurricane Michael, and this helps them save money.

"It makes me feel good because I'm helping somebody," said Bay County Resident Kayden Barfield.

"There's hope, we want to give hope. There's brighter, brighter days coming and were going to be apart of that," said event organizer Kim Kirchoff.

Event organizers say the backpacks and leftover supples from the event will be given to local schools.
